It feels very incongruous to write this week’s Friday Drops, to actively seek out moments of gratitude as we witness the genocide that is taking place in Gaza right now. The whole week feels very incongruous. I am still on vacation, though I’ve now left Spain and am visiting my sister in the UAE. I’ve enjoyed her and her family’s company immensely. The UAE is hot and bright and brilliant. The sun shines off the sand and the white stone here with the same intensity that it shines off the snow in Ottawa in the depths of winter. Sunglasses are not an option. The temperature fluctuates from high 20s in the middle of the night to low 40s in the middle of the day. It’s a climate unlike anything I have never encountered.
We go out to see Burj Khalifa, a 555 metre skyscraper in the middle of the city. We go to Abu Dhabi and tour the Grand Mosque, itself an architectural marvel. We go to the beach, twice, swim in water so warm we are in almost at sunrise, and out …
