Hot in here - am I right??

For years, I have been the girl in the office (on the couch, on the bus, at the park) shivering in extra layers, hat over headscarf, hood over hat, winter scarf over face, arms crossed over body and rubbing each other for warmth. Every fall, by October, I am in my parka while others are still in their light autumn jackets. I’ve pulled off cardigans over tank tops in the summer as my hijabi wardrobe and kept extra cardigans at work to deal with the overzealous air conditioning. For years.

Then Covid hit, and I wasn’t in the office for about 3 summers, long enough for the hellscape that is climate change to cross my comfort threshold and enter into “it’s too hot!” territory. Now, we are back at the office and I find myself wondering, “why is the AC so weak?” Same at the grocery store. Same at the dentist.

Every hijabi has heard “aren’t you hot in that?” more times than she can count.
