Absolutely loved reading this!! Also as an honourary Canadian, the word Loblaws made my heart sing. Their Portuguese rotisserie chicken also slaps!!! <3
Hahaaa Loblaws... I was thinking about that as I wrote the names of the grocery stores. Very Canada/Ottawa specific. Yes, their rotisserie chicken is amazing but if you're ever in this area again, I implore you to try the one at Food Basics. Really good and their marinade is unparalleled.
So true. I loved your father's surreptitious "reveals."
I can't cook, but my wife and my brother love to cook. And there's definitely an element of love that gets transmitted through a meal. And even when not cooking, the ceremony and visual appeal of setting the table with extra effort is an expression of love.
My father's surreptitious "reveals" have been a life long, ongoing recurrence. He will stop by unannounced with packages of danish from the bakery section of the grocery store so often that we have come to rely on them when we're grocery shopping and determining the kids' "treats" to be included in their school lunches.
The ceremony and visual appeal with extra effort is definitely also an expression of love. And so is the idea of breaking bread with someone, even if you're going out to eat with them elsewhere, and neither of you is actually putting in that effort. Just the act of eating together softens the heart.
I've got so many thoughts on food as an expression not only of love, but as an avatar for so many emotions. I've got another essay in me about how the food I was teased for eating as a child is now hip and popular, and what that means. Food is symbolic of so much.
Gorgeous memories ... love the whispered secrets about ice cream and cookies. Baba sounds cool, always bagging a bargain. Lovely memoir writing
Thank you! (and yes, Baba is cool ;))

Fr I used the same pic you used at the top in this post for one of mine a long time ago called iScream. 😂👸🏼👌🏻💅
Hahahaaa I feel like it’s the wrong pic for this post. It’s so ice cream specific. Probably fits your post better
What about their potato wedges?
LOVE their potato wedges.
